Gladiola Parker   arriving at Murfreesboro, NC aboard the mail-boat "Calumet"  she is the one standing  at far right.

Going the twenty five miles from her home at Sarem to Murfreesboro was an all day excursion. Uncle Pomp had flagged the early train to stop and pick her up in Sarem a few yards from her front door. This she rode to Tunis, there she caught the mail-boat to Murfreesboro.   They were met at the boat by some kind of a horse van that delivered them to Chowan just in time for supper.

This is my working hypothesis  - the way I see it as of this moment!!
