           This is my working hypothesis - the way I see it as of this moment!! 

   This Thomas Whitmell was married to Mary and was living in Charles City County, VA in 1688. 
In Jan 1690 judgement was granted one Thomas Whitmeal in Charled City County.  Ct Minutes
He had died by 4 Dec 1693 when his will was proved and his widow Mary was allowed probate.
 5 Aug 1695 - John Weever, who was security for Mary Whitmel as guardian of the orphans of Thomas Whitmel, prays for relief as their mother has lately married Arthur Cavenaugh.

  This Arthur Kavenaugh of Surry Co, VA sold land to his step son Thomas Whitmel of Surry Co, VA on 13 July 1715 as recorded in the Chowan Deed Book B#1 page 104.

A John Whitmoald made a deposition in Surry in 1659 stating that he was 20 years old
