This is my working hypothesis - the way I see it as of this moment!!

1671 - William Walston pat 450 acres in Princess Anne Co VA

William Walston married 2nd in 1697 the widow Hester Sullivan and shortly thereafter moved into North Carolina.

1673 - Norfolk County, VA- no date-OWEN HAYES will- son-in-law John Sullivan and his son John, Daughter Ann when she comes of age--he had a total of 4 daughters (all were not named). One daughter Isabel Lake, another daughter Mrs. Francis Woodward, a daughter Mrs. John Sullivan, and the unmarried Ann.

5-7-1695- Administration of John Sullivan estate granted to Hester, relict. PA Co VA

5-5-1727 Hester WALSTON will. Granddaughter
Rebecca Sullivan, Mary Smith, son John Sullivan.

William Walston and his wife Hester were granted a warrant for land in the Province of North Carolina by Lord Craven. The land was surveyed in May 1695, and returned signed in April 1697. Also on the warrant was William's wife Hester and heirs Philip Walston and William Walston, Jr. There were several land transactions in these early records to prove that they probably arrived shortly after April 1697, probably from Norfolk, VA where a William Walston married a widow named Hester Sullivan. [Philip and William Jr. may have been the sons of a previous wife]. William Walston Sr. deeded land to his grandson William, son of Philip and Dorothy. William Sr. died about this time (1720) and Hester returned to Norfolk where she died in 1727. E- mail from Luanne Mank 5/30/99

The line descends from John Sullivan (1637-1698), some say John Thomas O'Sullivan, who immigrated from Ireland to Northumberland Co. VA in 1655 with Elizabeth, I think his sister, others think his mother. He went from Northumberland to Lower Norfolk Co. VA in 1673 when he was 33 years old.
John 1 worked as an Overseer for Owen Hayes and married his daughter, Mary. John 1 and Mary had 3 sons - Morris, Owen and John 2 (1665-1695).
Morris had 2 known sons but their line has not been tracked by anyone I know. The lines of both Owen and John 2 are well known. John 2 married Hester H. and they had one child, John 3 (1695-1728). John 3 married Catherine Bright and they had one son Daniel (1728-1792). More people follow the line of John 1 than any other Sullivan line I know.
I agree that Hester remarried as shown on your web site.
These two entries should be all the proof you need to separate John 1 and John 2.

Many people get mixed up because there were 3 Johns in succession but looking at the dates helps clear it up.
I note that I had Hester listed as Hester H. so that tends to reinforce the theory that she was also a Hayes. John 2 may have married his first cousin!
You are welcome to share this with your group. As I say I have a lot of data on the Sullivan line but it is not my line.

1671 - William Walston patented 450 acres in Princess Anne Co. -- I do not have a description of the land so I do not know where it was located.   Was this William Walston one of Thomas Walston's 5 sons?

Perhaps 1675-1680... as Mary Walston married Thomas Russell c. 1675 (per Joel) and had 2 children before Thos Russell died in 1684 ... William Walston gave his sister Mrs. Mary Russell 200 acres called Surry Plantation. Was Surry Plantation (200 acres) part of Thomas' land or part of William's land?

George and Francis Newton SOLD to Capt Francis Morse 200 acres called Surry Plantation which I (George Newton) bought of Thomas Griffin, FORMERLY GIVEN TO Mary Russell late wife of William Hillyard BY HER BROTHER WILLIAM WALSTONE and SOLD to me 16 March 1691 for 200 pounds sterling AND ANOTHER TRACT CALLED PINEY ISLAND. (What does this mean? Need to find the deed of 16 March 1691. Q: how do you sell something in 1689 that you bought in 1691? Also, it sounds like Mary Russell Hillyard got Surry Plantation about 1675-1680, then SOLD it to Thomas Griffin, who SOLD it to George Newton, who is now selling it to Capt. Morse. Is that how you read the abstract?
