She and husband John Webb
apparently lived in the Scotland Neck area in the 1770's, then settled
in Edgecombe, where he died testate about 1785. She apparently
survived him many years. In Edgecombe they lived in that area near
Lawrence (Killquick to the locals), so it wasn't far from the Halifax
line. His will mentions several sons - John and William, and a
married daughter, and then a younger son James Webb who still required a
guardian (Patience) well into the 1790's [DG]

Halifax Co dsp
In 1792 he became a
member of the Royal White Hart Masonic Lodge in Halifax.
He represented the borough of Halifax in the legislature in 1803, 1809,
1813, 1814 and 1816. In 1816 he was elected attorney general of the
state, which position he held until November 1825. William Drew
acted as attorney for many of the prominent citizens of the area." He
was a enthusiastic breeder and racer of thoroughbred horses. "He
never married and became bankrupt shortly before his death. His will,
dated 8 Apr 1827 and probated in Halifax in May of that same year,
bequeathed his secretary, gold watch, and bedstead "now at Mr
Calvert's in Northampton Court House" to his friend Mrs. Mary Stitch
for her kindness and attention to him in his last ill

another distinguished advocate in the person of William Drew. He realized
the truth of Dryden's aphorism as to the close alliance sometimes existing
between a great wit and a madman. Such was his eloquence and learning that

From my Eastern NC Families, I see that Annie Baker Nicholls (daughter

in the Trinity Cemetery I sent you earlier today.
From the loose estates papers of Halifax County, in the file of Jehu
Nicholls, I see that he had two grandchildren as heirs in 1872 - Mary
Savage
(age 5) and Julia Savage (age 3), daughters of Ben O. Savage.

I am looking at the same guardian account that you mentioned, in Bertie
County, in which John Mackey was guardian of Mary Cary Drew, orphan of
John Drew, and the account runs from 1784 to 1785 and stops. From
the above, the John Drew, Sr., who lived for a while in Halifax County
and then ended up in Bertie, cannot be the father of this Mary of the
guardian account. Who is she?
She is sister to that John Drew.
