O. Askew Dead: The
LEDGER records with sorrow the death of Aaron O. Askew, esquire, of
Askewsville. Last Sunday Mr. Askew felt unwell and took to his bed. On
Monday he felt well enough to get up and dress, but soon retired. During
Monday night his son called him and receiving no answer he went to the bed
and found his father speechless. Mr. Askew never rallied. Kind friends and
neighbors were in constant attendance at his bedside. He died Friday morning
just before day. Mr. Askew was a brave Confederate soldier. His neighbors
will miss him for he was truly a good friend. He was one of the best
Democrats in the county and the party has lost a dutiful worker. His wife
was Miss Janie
Cherry, daughter of Solomon
Cherry, esquire. M[r]. Askew leaves five children --A. O.

Dr. ANDREW J. ASKEW.
Departed
this life, at his residence in the county of Bertie on Wednesday the 30th day of
September 1874, Dr. Andrew J. Askew, after a
protracted illness of many months, in the 59th year of his age. . . . Dr. Andrew J. Askew in his early boyhood evinced a
disposition for
literary and professional life, and his means being ample to supply all his
needs was placed at the best Institutions of learning in our State.
After. . . preparation in the high school at Louisburg taught
by Mr. Bobbett, one of the first educators in his day, he was matriculated in
the University of North Carolina in the summer of 1835.
. . .
After leaving the University of North Carolina, he entered upon the study of
medicine under Dr. Cohoon who was then residing in the town of Winton in
Hertford county. Completing his preparatory studies, he proceeded to
Philadelphia, mat[ri]culating in the University of Pennsylvania
and graduated in that renowned Institution, with much proficiency and with the
enti[r]e respect and esteem of the learned Professors, whose
lectures he had attended. . . .
Returning . . . he was married in the year 183- to
Miss Mary Cross, of Hertford county, a most excellent and accomplished lady, and
of high family and social position. He settled in the county of Bertie, on his
patrimonial inheritance, the homestead of his father and mother, where he
continued to reside . . .
Endowed by nature, with a kind, gentle and cheerful disposition, unpretending
and unostentatious in his manners seeking as the business o[f] his
life, that greatest of all profession[s], which on its reaching,
and deep-searching philanthrophy, and charity, delights in administering to, and
alleviating the pains, suffering, and diseases of our poor frail, fallen and
decaying humanity, Dr. Askew may in truth and justice, be called by the friends
and neighbors around him the "good samaritan." . . . Dr. Askew sought that retirement and peace in his
rural home, surrounded by his neighbors and friends by whom he was [b]eloved
and esteemed, and could their tears, sympathies and prayers have prevailed, he
would now be living amon[g]st them.
For thirty five years or more of his life did Dr. Askew devote his best
energies, his skillful learning, and his entire attention to the p[r]actice
of his profession.
Over a large section of t[h]e counties of Bertie and Hertford, in
sun-shine and in storm, in heat and cold, could this good man be seen, ev[e]r
hastening to the house of sickness, suffering and distress! . . .he became a christian, and connected himself with the
Baptist church. . .He was the friend and promoter of all the educational, benevolent, and
charitable Institutions, which have been built up, and fostered by the great
christian denomination of which he was a devout and consistent member. He leaves
a widow, and numerous family of children and grand-children, and many
connections of the most respectable families in the counties of Bertie and
Hertford. . . .He was a kind and
affectionate husband, a tender father, a good brother, a sincere friend, a
skillful and self-sacrificing Physician, and faithful neighbor, and true and
consitant christian. . . C.

In
Memoriam.Died at Pitch Landing on the 29th of July, 1877, age 27 years,
John E. Askew. He was the oldest son of the late,
beloved and lamented Dr. A.
J. Askew and his wife, Mary. The stay and hope of a widowed mother is gone;
a large family smitten with woe and the whole [co]mmunity shocked
in the suddenness of an irreparab[l]e loss. The young man thus
struck down on the very threshold of his manhood was brave and comely, and full
of promise for the future. Hundreds of his friends gathered to his burial and by
their tears, gave proof of the hold the dead youth had won in public affection.
In his brief illness he expressed much sorrow that the Savior had been so little
in his previous thoughts, but peace was his in the last sorrowful hour. Hope
came to him in his agony and lighted with a beautiful smile a face that grew in
death as that of an angel. O[h] deep and wond[r]ous mystery of God!
What blessed compensatisn is thus born in even the darkest providence? But alas!
John E. Askew has come and gone and nothing is left but the memory of his
gracious and manly virtues. May God give peace to his ashes and comfort to his
sorrowing friends.
