This is my working hypothesis - the way I see it as of this moment!! 

Mary Cotten and Absalom Spiers were married 15 December 1782 in Winton NC.

The widow Mary Cotten Spiers applied 13 Nov 1840 in Hertford Co NC aged 82 for a pension as a Rev. War widow. again on 23 April 1849 age 85.

Absalom Spiers lived in Winton NC. He was born 1 Nov 1760,  a son of Absalom Spiers and wife Rachel of Nansemond Co VA. He died 17 May 1810.
In the file We also find the  birth record of two of his brothers, Thomas, 8 Oct 1762 and Elisha born 31 Jan 1767.

     three more that were stillborn or died as infants bef. James was born in 1789

       married 14 Aug 1825 Mary A Spiers 12 Aug 1803 -  1st cousin
                entry in Dr. Thos O'Dwyer's 1825 Diary 

       a. Lavenia Spiers ca 1830 -
            married Samuel B Powell born Hampton, VA
                   came to  to Murfreesboro NC,   was a  first class cabinet maker 
                 he learned his trade under an apprenticeship with Salisbury & Co. of Norfolk
                   As for Lavenia Spiers, daughter of Mary A. and Thomas Spiers, I cannot
                       find a trace. Apparently there was some tragedy (influenza or illness)
              which claimed her. I also remember my father saying that Samuel Powell was
                        a "ne'er-do-well," but he never offered more than that. e-mail from Betty

                                       He was a teenager during the Civil War and
