This is my working hypothesis - the way I see it as of
this moment!!
Jesse Hays was born ca 1803 in Northampton County NC, the son
of Kinchen Hays and his 1st wife a daughter of Samuel Parker and his wife
Mary. Some say her name was Susannah.
On 7th day of March 1814, Darius Parker appointed guardian to Jesse Hays and
Cornelius Hays, orphans of Kinchen Hays, dec'd. NH Co NC
On 15 September, 1822 Mary Parker, widow of Samuel Parker, of Northampton Co NC
recorded a Deed of gift to her grandson, Jesse Hays. Lauderdale Co AL Deed Bk 5,
page 477.
She deeded him another in 1828 and he recorded the 1822 one in 1832.
The 1830 census of Lauderdale County, Alabama lists
Jesse Hays [living alone] between the ages of 20 - 30 years and the owner of 32
slaves.
"Jesse Hays rode into town on a horse, with books in his saddlebags. He got
a job as tutor of the Wilcoxson children, and later married one of the
daughters."
Jesse Hays and Sarah Ann Wilcoxson were married 29 Feb 1836 in Lauderdale Co AL
1850 census Jesse Hays 47 born in NC.
Another story was that Jesse was stabbed in the back by a negro slave, and died
two days later.
It is known that he died sometime between the years 1857 and 1860.
His wife Sarah Ann lived to be an old woman [ca 1820 - aft 1880].

"After the veterans returned home, several of them were working in the
woods. When they were paid on Saturday night, they met downtown apparently for
drinking and gambling. On a particular Saturday night there appears to have been
a big fight. The following Saturday as Richard was on his way down town, he was
either riding with or met someone, as they were watering the horses at the
spring near the Barnett place, Richard made the remark that he was not going to
have any of the foolishness like the last Saturday night. At this point the
unidentified person pulled a pistol and shot Richard."
