          This is my working hypothesis - the way I see it as of this moment!! 


Thomas Carter was a Justice from 1663 - 1665.

Thomas Carter  died intestate before 3 May 1669 when his widow Elinor requested appointment as administratrix. (Chapman, Isle of Wight Wills, p 64).  

9 Aug 1669   Isle of Wight  William Cooke and his wife Mary convey "to Thomas Carter Junr, sunne of Thomas Carter late of county" 400 a.

By 9 Sept 1673 Elinor had married William Groves when she presented the inventory of Thomas Carter's estate.

"5 horses, 3 mares, 42 head of cattle, 22 head of hogs, tobacco in debts 5,500 lbs, 1 set of joiner's tools worth 400 lbs tobac, 1 bill of Christopher Hollyman -800 lbs tob, 1 bill of Mr. Cobbs -- 35 lbs tob, 2 feather beds and 2 flock beds, 4 servants --2 whereof to serve 3 years apiece, one five years, and one four years. 102 ozs. of pewter, 2 pistols, 3 iron pots, 1 small brass pot, 2 brass kettles, 2 brass skillets, 6 brass pans, 1 brass skimmer, 2 iron dripping pans, 2 iron spits, 2 pair of fire tongs, 2 pair andirons, 2 frying pans, 2 pairs of bellows, 1 cross saw, 1 hand saw, 1 set of joiner's tools and carpenter's tools, 2 guns, 1 back sword, 4 new spades, 2 old pairs of plough irons, 2 ploughshares, 2 pair of stilliards, 2 warming pans, 1 pair of  ? potsacks, 1 long tobacco board, 1 form, 2 small tables, 4 leather chairs, 3 trunks, 4 chests, 2 wooden chairs, 3 brass candlesticks, 1 brass chafing dish, 5 pair of sheets, 2 dizen napkins, 2 table cloths, 2 looking glasses."
