"Our family visited
Neidenstein when I was growing up and my mother still has very
fond memories of the summers she spent there as a child with her
Oncle Joseph and Tante Ida. What she doesn't like to remember
are the toileting arrangements - which were primitive! She told
me recently how they used to dry washing by spreading it out on
the grass and according to her, sprinkled water on it to
"bleach" it. Her aunt Ida used to rub her cheeks with
red crepe paper when her mother came to collect her, to make her
look "healthy"! I think she said her Aunt Ida ran a
little sweet shop too.". . .
